Grapes in bags

In august, our grapes start ripening. The colours of the grapes are changing and they get much softer and sweeter. This is also discovered by flies, bees and to lesser extent by birds who start eating the grape berries.
To prevent those attacks we started to make small bags in which the thrushes are protected. This bag does not only protect against insects and birds, but creates a micro-environment for tasteful ripening of the grapes.

The fabric used for sewing the bags was bought from AVEVE. It is normally used to protect crops such as leeks and carrots from insects. It is not expensive and handled well in a normal sawing machine, we used a Toyota model. After the season, the bags are washed and dried for the next year to kill the fungi and other potential infectants.

Enjoy your grapes!!
